Creating a Screwless Magnetic Asus Speakermic Mount

Update:

February 5, 2024

I deployed the initial print of this at work, and it was very successful. That room was often used and would have multiple issues weekly, but when the device was locked down it resulted in a lesser amount of issues.

Unfortunately the company decided to spend more than 7x the cost of refreshing the rooms on buying new Cisco devices. So this got shelved.

I forgot to take a picture :/

We use Asus Google Meet SpeakerMics in our conference rooms, and the Micro-USB wire is the weakest link in the setup. Securing this, as well as limiting movement of the speaker, will cause the setup to be much more robust.

The inspiration for this design is the magnetic locks in retail stores. It’s not meant to be a bulletproof solution, but it works as a strong enough deterrent to dissuade people from poking around. This will result in less last minute support tickets for the conference rooms.

The magnets are 9.5mm x 9.5mm, and have a strength of 10lbs of force per magnet. Between the force and the lessened surface area at the top of the ‘bolt’ of the lock, the mechanism is very smooth and I suspect it will last without maintenance. Below is a digram I made of it.
