Through my journey of Hydroponic Gardening, I have encountered algae growth on the tops of some of the growing mediums. Specifically, the Edn SmallGarden’s exposed SeedPod ‘dirt’ is quick to flare up with green algae. I have not had this happen with the Aerogarden devices.
Although mostly harmless to the plants already growing, the algae can sometimes prevent germination if it manages to grow first. The algae also can consume the nutrients in your system, so the best course of action is to get rid of it as soon as you spot it.
For getting rid of the algae I’ve settled on using Hydrogen Peroxide, as I can soak a paper towel in it and blot / scrape away the algae. Fortunately the Peroxide is perfectly safe to use in moderation, even for plants that can be consumed in the future.
